BIOGRAPHY
Christopher Alker is a New York City-based Registered Architect in New York & Florida.
From an early age, it was clear that architecture was in his blood. His family name, Alker, is synonymous with an earth-based stabilized building material. His middle name, Robert, is the name of his great uncle Robert "Chick" Childress, a successful Denver-based architect best known for his university building work, whose life was tragically cut short. And his initials, C-A, are synonymous with both a critical phase of professional practice, Construction Administration, and his preferred method of approaching architecture presented by British architect and theorist, Jeremy Till, Contingent Architecture.
Originally from Houston, TX, he is the byproduct of a chemical engineer and an former fashion model. He studied urban design and theory while attending the University of Texas at Austin, and followed his studies with an apprenticeship to a master carpenter in the San Francisco Bay Area. He moved to New York City in 2004 to work for Handel Architects on large scale ground up residential and hospitality projects. He subsequently worked with 2plus3 Architects, NV/Design Architecture, Delson or Sherman, Atema Architecture, and Marmol Radziner on two coasts before joining the third-party property management agency, AKAM, as their Director of Building Operations in 2020. He is currently the SVP of Building Operations where he oversees regulatory compliance, energy, capital project management, and emergency protocols for 400+ residential & commercial properties in the five boroughs of New York City & Westchester.
His experience includes the co-design and execution of large-scale ground-up residential & hospitality assets, several luxury apartment and townhouse renovation/additions, both The Nature Conservancy & AKAM’s New York City’s corporate headquarters, Lucid Motors’ Miami & West Palm Beach showrooms, countless zoning feasibility & capital reserve studies, code compliance, life safety awareness, landmarks preservation consulting, project management, client relations, business development, staff training, construction administration, capital improvement projections, and design management. He is regularly sought out for his expert opinion by the New York Times, Urban Land, Habitat Magazine, ABC News, and The Real Deal.
His interest in architecture includes design, theory, branding, detailing, construction, finance capitalism, programming, maintenance, life-cycle assessment, adaptive reuse, and post-occupancy evaluation. He is committed to both the art and science of buildings from cradle to grave.
